As a child, Eliseé survived the Rwandan genocide. Today, he leads an orphan acrobat group in his home country. He cares for the wellbeing and future of his performers—bringing a sense of happiness and meaning to their lives. But the heavy reliance on foreign aid puts Eliseé’s project in danger. Rosta Novák built a world-renowned circus group in Prague. He successfully manages his circus with a firm, paternal hand—but he’s completely overworked and exhausted.

Circus Rwanda is a documentary exploring the lives and cultures of these two entirely different people by bringing them together for a joint circus performance in Rwanda. By getting Eliseé and Rosta together through their mutual passion for circus, Circus Rwanda explores the pre-conceived notions and stereotypes held by their two disparate cultures towards each other. As the film develops through the preparation of the circus performance, Eliseé and Rosta’s world’s merge and hard truths begin to reveal themselves. What are the motivations of the subjects? Who is helping who?
Circus Rwanda, through the lens of circus and collaboration, explores the complex and dynamic relationship between Europe and Africa.
