A war drama about an ordinary carrier-pigeon, who, thanks to his desire to return back home, saves hundreds of soldiers trapped in trench warfare.
He is able to find his way back home, but he pays the resolute price.
William spends his peaceful and carefree life on the roof of an army
mobile birdhouse with other pigeons. He flies over a red field of poppies
and contentedly pecks grains from Pigeon Man. His palms represent
a home where William feels safe.
He is torn out from his idyllic life when the son of the Pigeon Man takes
him to the warzone. William finds himself among other carrier-pigeons
in a trench tent. A fierce war raging all around him. William’s eyelids
get heavy by fatigue and he falls into memories of his beloved home.
A scary explosion brings him back to reality. The trenches get accidentally
bombed by its own artillery and changes them into a fiery hell.
The Pigeon Man’s son takes the cage with William and runs through the
trench. The clay is stained with blood, wounded soldiers are shouting all
around. The soldier attaches a paper scroll with a military message to
his leg and sets him off into the coldness of the night with other pigeons.
William flies through a mixture of smoke and cordite over the trenches,
desperate soldiers crouching beneath him. William becomes their
last hope. If William returns back home and delivers a vital message,
he might save hundreds of lives.
William flies in the dark and sees another pigeon. He is hit by a bullet.
The dead body of the bird falls to the ground. William tries to fly faster.
He recognizes another carrier-pigeon from the trench tent in ubiquitous
smoke. Suddenly, hawks appear. One of them catches a pigeon in the
claws and gets lost in the clouds with his prey. William tries to escape
the other predator, but he is faster and catches him. He crushes William’s
wings with his claws. Bloody feathers are falling to the ground. The shot
frees William from the grip of the hawk’s strong claws. The bullet hits the
chest of the predator so he releases the grip. William falls to the ground,
unable to spread his injured wings. He falls into a red field of poppies
near the birdhouse. The Pigeon Man takes him into his hands. He reads
the military message and immediately hands it over to the artillery.
By his homecoming, William saves the soldiers from fiery hell in the
trenches. The bombing stops. The extraordinary feathered hero cannot
fly anymore, but he finds the safety of a new nest ― the palm of the Pigeon
Man’s son ― one of the soldiers he saved.
The metaphorical story full of fantasy scenes is based on the real events from the World Wars, in which carrier-pigeons were an important communication bridge. It emphasizes the importance and irreplaceability of home. The carrier-pigeon, sent off with a military message, is the soldiers’ last hope to see their homes again. Pigeon William is chained into a war affairs, he must set off for a terrifying journey. He is able to find his way back home, but he pays the resolute price. Although, he finds safe shelter in the warm hands of a soldier, whom he saved by homecoming. The central point of the short film is home, as well as an idea of the ordinary and the extraordinary. An unpretentious ashy pigeon becomes an important fatal element. Thanks to a paper scroll attached to his leg, it determines the fate of more than one hundred human lives.
