CHANGE OF HEART
A film by Apoorva Satish
Change of Heart is an upcoming feature-length social satire, based on real events transpiring within the patriarchal Brahmin community in South India. The film follows Maya, a progressive young woman, trying to confront established cultural and religious traditions while enduring a straitjacketed relationship with her conservative father, Subbu.
On their very first drive together in her brand-new car, Maya accidentally rams into a pig that is crossing the road. Her father, Subbu, firmly believes that colliding the car into a pig is a bad omen and that the vehicle is now cursed. He becomes agitated and forces her to sell the car. Maya wishes to calm her father down and appease him. She lies and promises to sell the car at once, even though she considers his beliefs as mere superstitions. Consequently, Subbu becomes increasingly suspicious and intrusive of her life. As the complex web of lies and unfortunate events keep pushing them away from each other, Maya must make a decision that will determine not only her future independence but also the very survival of her father.
Maya and Subbu
“Change of Heart” is a story about liberation and the phenomenon of moving beyond the chains of generational conditioning to connect with one’s higher self. Inspired by and deeply rooted in actual family events from the filmmaker’s childhood, the film projects the universal appeal of coming to terms with one’s own wounded inner child, a direct consequence of their past.
